With Round 5 in the books, 11 teams have booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League as places in the last 16 dwindle. Some of them are familiar faces, but others are a bit unexpected. Porto, LiverpoolBayern Munich, Real Madrid, Club Brugge, NaplesChelsea, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Benficaand Manchester City have booked their places, but what do the other teams have to do to join them in match 6?

First, let’s look at the tiebreakers if the team finishes tied for points. Things are a little different than the general league. The first tie-breaker is points in head-to-head matches between tied teams. If the tied teams are still level on their head-to-head points, it goes to head-to-head goal difference for the teams. Ultimately, the advantage would go to the team that scored the most goals. An example is what we saw Barcelona and Inter Milan. Inter beat Barca 1-0 at home and then drew 3-3 away, giving the Italian club four points from the head-to-head, while Barca got just one draw. This means that if they finish level on points, Inter go through.

If multiple teams are tied after going through all previous tie-breakers, then goal difference in all group games comes into play. Then there are goals scored in all group stage games, away goals in all group games, wins in all group games and then away wins in all group games. If that still doesn’t work, we arrive at the disciplinary points for each team and the UEFA club coefficient.
