China tops U.S. for first time in this ranking of world’s ‘best’ universities

China has overtaken the US in major rankings of the world’s best universities.

Of the 2,000 schools from more than 90 countries ranked by U.S. News and World Report, 338 Chinese universities made the list, compared with 280 U.S. universities.This is the first time that China has surpassed the United States

The results were reported in the publication’s “World’s Best Universities Ranking” published on Tuesday. The United States and China are followed by Japan (105 universities), the United Kingdom (92 universities) and India (81 universities).

The medium began its rankings in 2014 as more universities began competing for students as well as faculty and research investment. The ranking is based on a range of parameters, including research reputation, publications, conferences and citations. Student grades and individual courses are not included.

While China overtook the United States by 58, the report noted, most American universities appeared in the top half of the rankings, including eight of the top 10.

The report added four new themes to its 43 rankings: artificial intelligence; education and educational research; meteorology and atmospheric science; and water resources. “They’re hot areas right now and there’s a lot of interest at different levels,” Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, told MarketWatch in an email.

Among the top 10 schools in artificial intelligence, 5 schools are from mainland China; Carnegie Mellon University in the United States also ranks at the top.

While pandemic-related public health concerns and travel restrictions have partly contributed to a steep drop in numbers over the past two years, rising tensions between the two countries have also prompted Chinese students to increasingly seek alternative options in China and non-U.S.

International student enrollment at U.S. colleges and universities peaked in the 2015-2016 school year and has been declining since, the Institute of International Education said, citing visa issues, competition from other countries that get work visas, and a stronger social and political relationship between China and other countries.
