Instead of the compassion and empathy and healing we need. Women’s health and wellness has been left to the care of male ideology which has become more lax, indeed ignorant and violently oppressive in the attempt.’
What are fibroids?
Fibroids are growths in or around the uterus.
In 99 percent of cases, non-cancerous growths are made of muscle and fibrous tissue and vary in size.
Most women do not know they have fibroids as two out of three have no symptoms.
People with symptoms of fibroids may experience heavy or painful periods, abdominal pain, lower back pain, frequent urination, constipation, and pain or difficulty during intercourse.
In rare cases, complications can affect pregnancy or cause infertility.
Between 20 and 50 percent of women between the ages of 16 and 50 are thought to have fibroids at any one time.
And about three-quarters develop fibroids at some point during these reproductive years.
But only a third are large enough for doctors to see during a physical exam.
Doctors do not know what causes fibroids to develop. But they think the growth is linked to the female reproductive hormone estrogen, which has its highest levels during the reproductive years.
They tend to shrink when estrogen levels drop, such as after menopause, so they are not treated unless they cause symptoms.
Treatment includes drugs to relieve discomfort and shrink the growth, or surgery if these don’t work.
