
After an exciting opening week for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Group E and F games continue on Sunday.
One of the favorites in Group E – four-time men’s World Cup champions Germany – lost 2-1 to Japan on Wednesday. Germany now face the daunting task of facing Spain, who looked like world-class powerhouses in a 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica.
Canada, in its first World Cup since 1986, beat Belgium 1-0 in a tough match. On Sunday, they face Croatia, who were drawn to a goalless draw with Morocco.

Japan made two substitutions in the half and adjusted to a more aggressive 3-4-3 formation. Hiroki Ito came on as the third centre-back and Takuma Asano joined the attack.
In the 50th minute, both Itakura Yuki and Endo Wataru’s shots were blocked. Defender Francisco Calvo stopped Endo’s attempt to equalize with a save.
For Costa Rica, everything is going according to plan. Los Ticos sat back to stop Japan running behind their defense. For Japan, it will be looking to make some changes to score on the board and keep its last 16 hopes alive.

Costa Rica showed great pride after losing their opening match 7-0 to Spain, while Japan will be hoping to prove that victory over Germany was no fluke.
Japan, which put pressure on Germany early on, has remained behind against Lostikos, splitting possession (Japan 44%, Costa Rica 56%). Japan’s best attacking attempt came from Ritsu Doan, who drove into the box, but his cross was saved by goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

The two European heavyweights have had very different experiences in their respective World Cup openers. Spain opened with a 7-0 win over Costa Rica, while Germany lost 2-1 to Japan in one of the tournament’s most stunning results. Die Mannschaft is in a precarious situation.
